'Slaughtered' Harry Maguire told to accept offer to quit Man United and join new club - pundit
Harry Maguire must leave Man United if he wants to remain in the England team.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie wanted the centre-back to leave Old Trafford this summer after falling out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag.
However, as shown on TNT Sport (24 October), the England international got on the scoresheet in a rare start for the Red Devils in their 1-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Tuesday.
Despite a strong performance at Old Trafford, Maguire has struggled for minutes this season with just two starts in the Premier League. He was subject of a summer bid from West Ham, and held extensive talks over a potential move but a deal could not be agreed and he opted to remain in Manchester to fight for his place.
He remains in Gareth Southgate’s squad and featured in England’s 3-1 victory over Scotland last month (12 September), but despite hoping his goal could be a “turning point”, McAvennie insisted the 30-year-old will need to play regularly to keep his place.
“The weight on his shoulders at Man United, it’s a big weight. He’s obviously done really well,” he told Football Insider.

“From what I can see, fair play to [Maguire]. So hopefully it’s a turning point. He does get slaughtered, but I thought he should have left Manchester United but he’s obviously doing well, he’s in the team.
“Hopefully it’s a turning point. But I don’t care, you’ve got to play regularly to be in the England team, so go now, go as soon as you can. I hope he does well because the boy’s been slaughtered as far as I remember.”
