Sources: Harvey Barnes to undergo Newcastle United medical after breakthrough

Newcastle have booked a medical for Harvey Barnes with the winger set to complete a £35million move in the next week, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old has been on the radar of Howe and his recruitment team for a considerable period of time and talks are now well advanced with personal terms agreed.

Alan Saint-Maximin is on the brink of a move to the Saudi league and the funds from his departure will give Newcastle the FFP room to bring in more targets.

Newcastle are making excellent progress on a deal for Barnes and are now close to completion following a breakthrough in talks in the last hours.

Leicester are selling off a plethora of star players after their relegation to the Championship with Barnes following James Maddison out the exit door and Kelechi Iheanacho set to soon follow ami strong interest from Everton.

Barnes will become Newcastle’s second big-name capture of the summer transfer window following Sandro Tonali, who arrived for £52m from AC Milan.

The north-east giants hope to add at least two more signings, but there could first need to be some more departures to go with Saint-Maximin.

The capture of Barnes will be a major coup for Newcastle, given the interest in him from Premier League rivals including West Ham, Aston Villa and Tottenham.

The Englishman scored 13 goals in a struggling Leicester side last season and wanted to return to the Premier League following their relegation to the second tier.

Leicester are already working on replacements and have lost a number of key players this summer after their relegation from the English Championship.
