Sources: Aberdeen in pole position to sign Liverpool star Clarkson ahead of Rangers and Celtic
Aberdeen are the frontrunners for Leighton Clarkson’s signature with Liverpool willing to strike a deal this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 21-year-old is coming off the back of a successful season-long loan stint with the Dons in which he scored five goals in 34 league appearances.
That return helped Barry Robson’s side secure qualification for the Europa League courtesy of a third-placed Scottish Premiership finish behind Celtic and Rangers.
And Aberdeen are understandably keen to bring Clarkson back to the club on a permanent basis as they prepare to balance European and domestic commitments next term.
But, while Liverpool will let the midfielder end a 15-year stint on Merseyside in order to secure a permanent move, his future is undecided.
Football Insider understands that a number of clubs across England and Scotland are also keeping tabs on Clarkson, including Reading.

The Royals are readying themselves for life in League One after they suffered relegation from the Championship last season and would be ready to pounce given any encouragement.
Football Insider revealed last month that Rangers and Celtic are also keeping close tabs on Clarkson.
And so it will be left to the player to decide his next move, though insiders have described Aberdeen as the current favourites.
Having made just three senior appearances for Liverpool, Clarkson‘s biggest taste of English football came in a disappointing loan stint with Blackburn Rovers in which he made just seven appearances.
However, he has previously been the recipient of high praise from Jurgen Klopp, who singled him out after a 2021 friendly meeting with Osasuna.
“How Leighton Clarkson showed up when he came on!” the German said. “He is not the tallest, but he has a big heart and played super football, so when he plays as a No.6 he can win challenges.
“He may not get up in the air, but he can play along the ground. I really liked it tonight.”
