McAvennie fears 'hitch' in Celtic bid to sign Carter-Vickers as new asking price revealed

Frank McAvennie has told Celtic to pay the reported £10million fee it will take to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently.

The Hoops icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, predicts the defender can form a partnership with Christopher Jullien.

On 1 December, Record Sport reported Celtic will need to shell out £10million to secure the permanent signing of Carter-Vickers, 23.

The defender has made 17 appearances in all competitions since joining the Hoops on loan from Tottenham last summer (2021).

He has formed a formidable partnership with Carl Starfelt and has bagged himself two goals.

McAvennie admits £10million is a big fee for Celtic to pay but suggested the club should bite the bullet to keep their loan star.

“£10million is a lot of money for Celtic,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I think he can form a decent partnership with Jullien when he comes back.

“There could be the option to play Carter-Vickers, Jullien and Starfelt as a three.

“I would like to see that. With Carter-Vickers, he’s played a lot of football, more than he was getting at Tottenham.

“If things go right, he will also have silverware to his name in less than a month.

“If he stays with us, he has the chance to have a good career so I don’t think that will be the issue.

“The potential hitch for a January deal is that fee. He wants to join. Will we pay it? If the money is there, I would.

“We just don’t know if that’s an option at this point.”
