Sources: Coventry City agree deal for Barnsley defender Liam Kitching

Coventry City have agreed a deal with Barnsley for defender Liam Kitching, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old is currently heading to Coventry to complete a medical and put pen to paper on his new deal.

Kitching has been a top target for the Sky Blues this summer, with the Championship side submitting several offers to Barnsley in recent weeks.

Both parties have now finally agreed a fee and Kitching is set to complete his move before Friday’s transfer cut-off.

Barnsley currently sit 12th in League One after winning two of their opening games.

Kitching has featured in four of Barnsley’s league matches before being left completely out of their matchday squad against Wigan last Saturday as talks progressed over his exit.

The young centre-back played a pivotal role in Barnsley’s promotion push last season, missing only one league game as he helped the Tykes to a fourth-placed finish in the league.

He played every minute of Barnsley’s play-off run as the Yorkshire side fell to a last-gasp defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday.

Kitching has been with Barnsley since joining the club from Forest Green Rovers in 2021.

During his two years at the Oakwell Stadium, Kitching has made 93 appearances for the club and has five goals to his name.

Coventry manager Mark Robins is looking to strengthen his defence despite starting the 2023/24 season by only conceding three goals in four games.
