Revealed: Newcastle United bid for Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen - sources

Newcastle United had a late bid rejected for Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Manager Eddie Howe was keen to strengthen his back line in the final weeks of the window and sanctioned a move for the Denmark international, 27.

But Palace knocked back Newcastle’s offer, which was believed to be in excess of £30million.

It meant that the north-east giants ended the summer without bringing in a new centre-back to provide cover and competition for regulars Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.

The three big-money signings were midfielder Sandro Tonali, winger Harvey Barnes and right-back Tino Livramento, while left-back Lewis Hall signed on loan from Chelsea and 18-year-old attacker Yankuba Minteh also joined.

It is believed that Howe wanted an upgrade during the summer on Jamal Lascelles, the long-serving 29-year-old who came off the bench for the last 16 minutes of the 3-1 defeat to Brighton last weekend.

Schar and Burn paired in central defence for that match as star man Botman was out with an ankle injury sustained in the defeat to Liverpool the previous weekend.

Newcastle tried to sign Andersen as they worked on bringing in a proven centre-back experienced in the Premier League.

The Dane has made a big impact at Palace since signing in the summer of 2021 from Lyon after a season on loan at Fulham.

He has played every minute of the London club’s four Premier League matches this season, and 76 times in all during his two years at Selhurst Park.

Andersen has three more years remaining on his Palace contract.
