Sources: Matthias Ginter rejects Aston Villa move after ‘big-money’ offer

Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter has rejected a summer move to Aston Villa, Football Insider understands.

The Midlands giants have pushed hard to sign the 28-year-old as they look to overhaul their defence in the upcoming window.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Ginter has turned down a “big-money” contract offer from Villa and is instead set to join his old club Freiburg.

That is a major blow for Steven Gerrard and the Villa recruitment team, who had hoped to take advantage of Ginter’s imminent free agent status.

The 46-times Germany international is out of contract at Monchengladbach at the end of next month.

The Claret and Blues are in the market for a centre-half this summer and identified Ginter as a potential option.

Gerrard is planning to revamp his defence in the next window and break up the partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konza.

Neither of the defenders have convinced Gerrard since his appointment in November.

The Villa boss has made it clear behind the scenes that the current squad is not good enough to achieve the owners’ ambitions.

Ginter has made 30 appearances across all competitions this season and has scored once.

The centre-half joined Borussia Monchengladbach in a near-£15million deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.

He is now set to return to his boyhood club Freiburg, whom he left in July 2014.
