'Frozen out' Lacazette could agree new Arsenal contract after Sky reveal - pundit

Danny Mills has suggested Alexandre Lacazette could sign a new contract at Arsenal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed Lacazette looked like he had been “frozen out” but has benefitted from the fallout between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mikel Arteta.

Lacazette has skippered Arsenal after Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy last month (14 December) and it has helped his form.

The striker has scored twice and provided three assists in his last five Premier League starts.

His current contract expires at the end of the season and, as quoted by Sky Sports last month (26 December), Arteta admitted it is causing a “cloud” over the club.

“Maybe a year ago Lacazette was thinking ‘That’s me done. Aubaemyang’s taken the limelight, he’s the main man, he’s got the new deal and that’s pushed my nose out of joint’,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s maybe looking at it now and thinking ‘The Aubameyang situation, he could be going and we don’t really have another striker’. Maybe that’s given him a bit of a boost and a bit of a lift.

“He might be thinking ‘This a great opportunity, maybe I can stay and be part of Arteta’s plans’.

“It’s just how it happens sometimes. It’s not fallen lucky but he’s got an opportunity and at the moment, he’s grasping it.

“If he’s going to be a decent striker with the other young, energetic players around him that could work.

“From a player who you thought might be frozen out a little bit, suddenly he’s becoming one of the main figures.”
