Liverpool legend takes swipe at Jurgen Klopp after decision v Everton

Liverpool legend John Arne Riise has criticised manager Jurgun Klopp for his decision to not start Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in the 1-1 draw with Everton.

The Reds were held by their rivals in the first Merseyside derby of the Premier League season at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, but one of the major talking points was manager Klopp’s decision to leave out the two star players.

Coutinho and Firmino and fellow attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been in sensational form for the Reds recently. All four players scored in the emphatic 7-0 Champions League victory over Spartak Moscow in midweek.

Like many Liverpool supporters, Riise was confused by the decision and took to social media to express his disappointment with the Liverpool boss, tweeting this message after the full-time whistle.

Liverpool controlled the first half and went ahead on 42 minutes through a sublime effort by Mohamed Salah. The 25-year-old cut inside onto his left foot and curled the ball into the top corner to give the hosts a deserved lead before half-time.

The Reds continued to dominate and created more chances after the break, but the game changed when Everton were awarded a controversial penalty after a clumsy challenge by centre-back Dejan Lovren.

The defender brought down Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who appeared to be moving away from goal, inside the box and referee Craig Pawson showed little hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Everton captain Wayne Rooney smashed the ball straight down the middle, sending goalkeeper Simon Mignolet the wrong way to hand the Toffees an unlikely share of the points.

In other Liverpool news, Reds fans were furious with this player for his performance against Everton.
