Patterson could push to quit Rangers after what I've heard - Hutton

Alan Hutton has suggested Nathan Patterson could look to quit Rangers if not given regular game time playing as a right-back.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old “won’t stick around forever” waiting to usurp James Tavernier.

Patterson has come off the bench to play as a right-winger in both of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s two games in charge so far.

Speaking at his press conference on Monday (29 November), the Rangers boss claimed Patterson’s defensive ability in an advanced role would help the Light Blues see out games they are winning.

However, Hutton insisted the youngster would rather be starting instead of James Tavernier.

“There’s a big decision there for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and what he does in the future,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Nathan Patterson won’t stick about forever hoping to play some minutes or as a bit-part player. He wants to play regularly.

“Ultimately, if you’re not playing your position and you’re not getting game time, you’re going to have to leave.

“I would never want to see that happen. He’s got everything that it takes to be a top, top modern-day full-back.

“Of course he’ll be happy to be playing. He’s still a young boy but ultimately he wants to improve in his natural position. That’s at right-back.

“It’s a difficult one for Van Bronckhorst. It’s one area of the pitch where he’s really going to have to make a serious decision moving forward.”

Tavernier has started 12 times in the league this season.

Meanwhile, Patterson has started just one Premiership game – the 2-1 win over Hibernian.
