Sources: Man United deals to sign two top January targets face collapse

Man United have abandoned huge-money deals for centre-backs Goncalo Inacio and Jean-Clair Todibo ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Red Devils have limited resources and are therefore unable to splash out in the mid-season window, meaning those deals now face a collapse.

Erik ten Hag’s side had registered interest in both Sporting CP star Inacio and Nice ace Todibo as they scoured the market for a new centre-back option after failing to land one in the summer.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (17 October) that Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is also a target for United – but a deal will be hard to do in January.

The Old Trafford club have been forced to operate with injuries to the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez already this season.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Man United could now turn their attention to signing low-cost alternatives to their top targets – the likes of Todibo, Inacio and Guehi.

Sources told Football Insider on Monday (23 October) that the Red Devils are one of several Premier League sides monitoring the progress of Uruguay international Sebastian Caceres.

It is believed Tottenham, Newcastle, Fulham and West Ham are also keeping tabs on Caceres.

The centre-back plays in Mexico for Club America, where he is under contract until December 2024 – and the Liga MX outfit are not expected to demand an eye-watering fee to part with him.

The 24-year-old has played 90 minutes in each of Uruguay’s last four World Cup qualifiers, playing alongside Barcelona star Ronald Araujo for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Man United lined up with a centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans as they ran out 2-1 winners away at Sheffield United on Saturday (21 October).
