Kieran Maguire: Todd Boehly set to 'pressure' staff as Chelsea look to strike new deals

Chelsea will apply pressure to their marketing and commercial department to improve sponsorship revenue next season.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Chelsea’s need to grow revenues next season.

The Blues announced earlier this month that they have extended their long-term partnership with Unilever brand Rexona for a further two years.

It follows Chelsea finally striking an agreement with Infinite Athlete as their front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2023/24 season.

The Londoners grew their commercial revenue to £177million in their latest 2021/22 accounts, but Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will be eager to grow that figure after investing large amounts of money into the club since his takeover.

Maguire believes Boehly and the Chelsea board will apply ‘a lot of pressure’ to the commercial team at Stamford Bridge as growing revenues will be their priority over the next few years.

Ultimately, sponsorship revenue is easy money for doing absolutely nothing as far as the club is concerned,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

So there will be a focus from Chelsea to grow that figure.

I think there will be a lot of pressure put on the commercial and marketing department to sign up more and more sponsorship deals and that’s the way that football is going.

There is a natural ceiling when it comes to subscription income as far as broadcasting is concerned as people are already being priced out of subscription television.

The danger, of course, is if you do that then fans will take the illegal alternatives and they realise that they can get the product at a far more consumable price.
