Sources: Pochettino and Chelsea coaches have 'big concern' after Chilwell update

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino and figures behind the scenes are seriously concerned by Ben Chilwell’s latest injury, sources have told Football Insider.

The left-back, 26, has been struggling with fitness issues throughout the 2023-24 campaign and came off the bench in the Blues’ last two Premier League games.

Chilwell started with the armband as Chelsea beat Brighton 1-0 in the League Cup on Wednesday (27 September), but was forced off with a late injury.

He completed 90 minutes but exited the pitch in the dying embers of the cup clash with a hamstring problem.

Pochettino has since confirmed that the injury “doesn’t look good” and warned fans to expect “bad news” on Chilwell’s condition.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the defender’s recurring injuries are the subject of “big concern” at Stamford Bridge.

This news comes after Football Insider revealed on Friday (29 September) that Chelsea could explore a move for a new left-back in the January transfer window.

It is believed the Blues could push to get Marc Cucurella off the books in the mid-season window to fund a move for a new option.

Chilwell has made seven appearances this season, notching one assist – but is now set for another spell on the treatment table.

He made just 22 starts across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign with a number of injuries limiting his involvement.

The left-back has managed just 92 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club for a reported £50million in 2020.

He is under contract until June 2027 after penning an extension earlier this year.
