Kieran Maguire shares Brentford ownership verdict as takeover deal agreed

Brentford owner Matthew Benham will be ‘eyeing up’ new takeover opportunities after agreeing to sell his stake in FC Midtjylland.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Benham’s surprise sale of the Danish club.

As reported by The Athletic, Brentford owner Benham has agreed a deal to sell his majority stake in FC Midtjylland after nine years as their majority shareholder.

Benham bought the club two years after taking over Brentford with the intention of experimenting with new strategies and models in Denmark before implementing them at the London club.

Brentford continue to use statistical data to power their transfer business and despite selling FC Midtjylland, they will continue to be supplied data by Smartodds – the gambling company he runs.

Maguire believes many people were surprised by Benham’s decision to sell, but insists he will already be eyeing up other takeover opportunities elsewhere.

“I think many people are surprised at Matthew Benham’s decision to sell his majority stake in FC Midtjylland,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The club and the relationship they had with Brentford acted as a very useful bolthead against the challenges which have been brought into player recruitment post-Brexit.

Also, as part of the broader benefits that come with the multi-club ownership model.

I’m sure he would have done his sums in great detail before making the decision.

I’m also sure he will be eyeing up other opportunities if he feels that is in the best interest of Brentford – which ultimately is his main aim.
