Carlos Borges: West Ham hijacked as Man City star undergoes medical - sources

Man City have given rising star Carlos Borges permission to undergo a medical and finalise a move to Ajax, sources have told Football Insider.

The Dutch giants have won the race to sign the winger, 19, after successfully hijacking Premier League club West Ham.

The Hammers initially believed their £14million offer to the Premier League champions was enough to complete a deal and were in the process of finalising terms.

However, Ajax stepped in with an improved £17m bid that has been accepted by Man City.

Borges has now been given the green light to fly to Amsterdam and undergo his medical before being announced as Ajax’s newest addition of the summer transfer window.

A verbal agreement is in place between the two clubs with Borges also agreeing terms on a four-year contract.

Last month (11 July), Football Insider revealed that City were willing to sell the 19-year-old but would likely insert a buy-back clause in any potential deal.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been open to offloading Borges on a temporary or permanent basis this summer.

Although the youngster is highly regarded at the Etihad, there is a consensus that he will massively struggle to break into the first team.

Borges himself is aware of the difficulty of regular game time in Manchester and has been attracting interest from Premier League and Championship clubs after an impressive season for City’s Elite Development Squad.

On 10 July, Football Insider revealed that Bournemouth were ready to join the chase for Borges this summer.
