Kieran Maguire: Liverpool owners have caused 'huge damage' as Government set to intervene

The independent regulator for English football will prevent Liverpool owners FSG from causing further damage to the game’s integrity.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the powers of the new Government-backed regulator.

Liverpool were one of six Premier League teams to join and then almost immediately abandon the breakaway Super League plot in April last year.

That prompted the creation of Tracey Crouch MP’s fan-led review into the governance of English football.

The review proposed an independent regulator to safeguard against further breakaway attempts and to protect club identity and heritage.

And the Government announced on Monday (25 April) that it has set out a plan to implement the arbitrator alongside other facets of the review.

Maguire claims that, while the regulator won’t impact Liverpool’s day-to-day business, it will prevent FSG from damaging the fabric of the game.

“Generally, it won’t affect things behind the scenes too much,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The regulator may clip the wings of those at the club whose interests are purely on making money and are not on football.

“We saw that was the case at Liverpool with Project Big Picture and Super League.

“But in terms of the ability to negotiate contracts or commercial activities, there will be close to zero involvement of IREF.

“It’s more to do with trying to preserve some integrity which was hugely damaged by the actions of Liverpool’s owners.”

FSG have been formally involved with Liverpool since 2010.

The Merseysiders take on Newcastle United in the Premier League today (30 April).
