Finance guru: Newcastle will pocket £15m from ‘huge’ Premier League change
Newcastle United could gain an extra £15million a season from overseas tours if they succeed in changing the structure of the Premier League.
That is the opinion of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how a restructuring of the Premier League would financially benefit the powerhouses of English football.
Football Insider sources revealed last Thursday (19 January) that Newcastle want to cut the Premier League to 18 teams to accommodate more European matches and overseas tours.
The Magpies jetted off for a Saudi Arabia hot weather training camp during the World Cup break to solidify ties with their new owners and participate in a friendly match against Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal.
Eddie Howe’s side have also previously travelled to Saudi Arabia in January 2022.
Plumley believes that Newcastle will have huge financial benefits from these overseas tours but will need to weigh that up with a potential broadcasting loss in the future.

“We’ve seen Newcastle go down the road of touring overseas by visiting Saudi Arabia during the World Cup break, Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“These tours can net you £10-15million a season if done correctly, provided it’s a big club with demand from a large fanbase.
“But while cutting the Premier League would have that financial boost, the flip side is that losing a couple of domestic fixtures could impact the broadcasting deals further down the line.
“So Newcastle will have to weigh up what they’d lose in that regard and make sure they gain not only financially but by positioning the club in a strong place.
“For the bigger clubs, which now includes Newcastle at the top end of the league, they would expect to gain an extra few million from what would essentially be a huge change in structure.“
