Tottenham ‘outrage’ is understandable as ‘huge’ £43m deal confirmed - expert
Tottenham have landed a shirt-sleeve sponsor “well above” the Premier League benchmark after agreeing a £42.5million deal with the South African government.
That is the opinion of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the response to Tottenham’s latest sponsorship deal.
Spurs announced a £42.5million three-year shirt-sleeve sponsorship with the South African government on Wednesday (1 January).
The club currently have an agreement with Cinch that earns £10million per season, while the new deal will earn upwards of £14million.
But the deal has been met with public backlash due to South Africa considering a state of disaster after record power cuts.
The Times reported on Friday (3 January) that South African president Cyril Ramaphosa plans to oppose the deal given the country’s current economic crisis.

Plumley highlighted that the agreement trumps most other Premier League sponsorships, while he also labelled the backlash “understandable”.
“There are two sides to the story,” Plumley told Football Insider.
“For Tottenham, the £42.5milllion deal is a huge shirt-sleeve deal that is well above the Premier League benchmark.
“Most other shirt-sleeve deals in the Premier League average between £5-£7m per season, so Tottenham have blown that out of the water.
“So Spurs will be delighted with this deal as it’s a great commercial move for the club and a large source of income.
“But it’s a sponsorship deal that has come with bad PR and the outrage from South Africa is entirely understandable given the political situation and the amount of money in question.“
