Premier League told to reject 'tricky' Chelsea exemption - ‘they can’t show sympathy’, says finance expert
The Premier League must not show sympathy to Chelsea and their financial situation while simultaneously trying to charge Man City.
That is the opinion of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Chelsea’s request for financial exemption in the Premier League.
The Blues have smashed spending records over the last six months, with new owner Todd Boehly splashing £500million on 16 signings since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea has since requested an exemption from Premier League spending rules when they submit their accounts at the end of the season.
The club claims they were unable to receive income for three months while former owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the government.
In the same week as Chelsea’s exemption request, the Premier League charged Man City with breaching financial rules over 100 times in 14 seasons.

Plumley understands Chelsea’s request but has urged the Premier League to find “consistency” while dealing with both cases.
“There is no benchmark or precedent for the Premier League to follow so ultimately it’s going to come down to their decision,” Plumley told Football Insider.
“It comes down to how much money the club possibly lost in those three months and how significant that would be in the long term.
“I understand why Chelsea are asking for an exemption considering how unique their situation was in world football.
“But it’s really tricky to set a benchmark for it.
“Especially as the Premier League are currently trying to go hard on Man City for their financial breaches, so they can’t show sympathy to Chelsea at the same time.
“They have to find consistency in their decisions.”
