Chelsea fast-track two £65m deals amid ‘growing worry’ at Stamford Bridge - expert

Chelsea are “desperate” to complete new front-of-shirt and sleeve sponsorship deals for next season to help the club’s revenue keep up with spending.

That is the opinion of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Chelsea’s lack of sponsorship deals heading into next season.

The Blues are currently sponsored by communication company ‘Three’, who pay £40million per season to be the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor.

But that deal is set to expire this summer and the Daily Mail report that Chelsea have no plans to extend that agreement and will instead look for more lucrative sponsorship deals.

Chelsea signed a £20million-a-season deal with Whalefin as the sleeve sponsor at the start of the season, but the cryptocurrency company were forced to terminate the partnership after suffering economically.

Plumley believes Chelsea could pocket £65million every season across both deals and insists the club’s financial team will be feeling the pressure to get new sponsors across the line.

“It’s two massive sponsorship areas for any football club,” Plumley told Football Insider.

The front-of-shirt sponsor is very much the pinnacle of any club’s commercial deals, and the sleeve sponsor has grown rapidly in recent years.

Chelsea’s last front-of-shirt deal set the ballpark at £40million-per-season, and they’ll be looking to match that or improve on it next season.

As for the sleeve sponsor, we’ve seen Tottenham set the bar with a £42.5million deal over three seasons.

Chelsea will want a deal of a similar ilk, so they’ll be targeting between £10 and £15million for that sponsorship.

So added together that’s around £65million of revenue that Chelsea haven’t secured for next season and that will be a growing worry at the club.

“Given the club’s spending, looming amortisation costs and potential lack of Champions League, Chelsea will be desperate to find sponsors quickly.
