Aston Villa news: Pundit issues 'big' verdict on Joe Gomez quitting Liverpool after development
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez would be “tempted” by the prospect of regular football and “a big role” at Aston Villa.
That is the view of ex-Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 24-year-old’s future at Anfield.
Gomez has been pushed out to right-back in recent weeks, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate the preferred centre-halves.
A Villa source told Football Insider (21 February) that Aston Villa have identified Gomez as a top-priority target ahead of the summer.
Steven Gerrard wants to bolster his centre-back options ahead of next season after convincing displays by Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings.
Gomez’s contract at Anfield runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Gomez’s future, Robinson said:
“I’m sure the prospect of a big role and regular football as a centre-half, as opposed to a right-back, would be tempting.
“Given his age and where he is at in his career, he will want to be playing every week. To get that under Steven Gerrard at a club like Aston Villa is a great opportunity for any player.
“But when you look at where Liverpool are, do you want to go to Villa? They’re in the bottom half of the table.
“The attraction will be regular first-team football. But if Gomez is playing 25 games a season for Liverpool it would have to be some pitch from Gerrard.”
