Pep Guardiola may copy Sir Alex Ferguson and axe Man City hero after news - Mills

Danny Mills has suggested Man City will move on Ilkay Gundogan this summer despite his heroics for Man City this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-City and England defender claimed Pep Guardiola needs to copy Sir Alex Ferguson’s strategy of brutally axing players at the peak of their powers.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month (16 May) that Gundogan, 31, is set to leave the club this summer with a year left to run on his current contract.

Since then, the Germany international scored a brace as City beat Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day (22 May) to secure their fourth Premier League title in five years.

Asked whether that could have an impact on his future, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s like what Sir Alex Ferguson did.

“You’ve got to keep reinventing your team, you can’t just keep players around. Making the decision to move players on when they are still good is difficult.

“That’s the situation they are going to have with the likes of Gundogan, allowing them to move on when they still have a purpose and are still good enough.

“Those are the critical decisions. It’s getting that decision right and making sure you bring in adequate replacements who will fit in immediately”

Gundogan, who was Guardiola’s first signing as Man City boss in the summer of 2016, has played over 250 times for the club across all competitions.

He was won every domestic trophy on offer with City but not the Champions League.
