Rangers tipped to sign mystery Euro goalkeeper after Allan McGregor update - pundit

Danny Mills has tipped Rangers to dip into the European market to sign a new number one goalkeeper this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed Van Bronckhorst will know the market well and may recruit a goalkeeper comfortable with playing out from the back.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday (8 June) that they have not opened talks over a new deal with Allan McGregor who is out of contract at Ibrox.

It is claimed both parties want to enter negotiations but the 40-year-old is not interested in a coaching role.

The Sun reported last month (29 May) that Rangers have shortlisted Jack Butland, 29, whose Crystal Palace future is uncertain, as a potential replacement.

Asked whether Butland could be a success at Ibrox, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Quite possibly.

“A fresh start, a fresh challenge.

“I would be surprised if Giovanni van Bronckhorst doesn’t know the European market quite well.

“Can Butland play out from the back as Van Bronckhorst wants to do, perhaps?

“It might be a good move for Butland but is he good enough to play with his feet and out from the back like Rangers probably want to move towards? I think there will be one or two question marks.

“Yes, it’s a potential move. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Van Bronckhorst has got one eye on someone in Europe as well.”

McGregor played 47 times across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign as Rangers won the Scottish Cup, finished runners-up in the Europa League and second in the Scottish Premiership.

He rejoined the club in 2018 and has now racked up 446 appearances across all competitions for the Gers.

In other news, a Premier League club are in advanced talks to sign a Rangers player after a record Ibrox offer.
