Tottenham told to build war chest with Sergio Reguilon sale after source's update - pundit

Kevin Phillips has urged Tottenham to raise transfer funds and “free up salary” with the sale of Sergio Reguilon this summer.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted an exit for the 24-year-old would “make a lot of sense” after his mixed spell under Antonio Conte.

A Tottenham source has told this site (28 April) that the club will listen to offers for Reguilon and will sell at the right price amid interest from an unnamed Spanish club.

It is understood the fee needed to seal a deal would be far less than the £43million buy-back option available to Real Madrid this summer.

Despite making 31 appearances across all competitions this term, Reguilon has been supplanted by Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon in the pecking order at times throughout the season.

Phillips suggested the left-back could “have his eye” on a return to Spain after failing to make his mark in the Premier League.

“From the outside looking in, that seems to make a lot of sense,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s not really been first choice since Conte has come in, so I think it’s fair to say he isn’t in the manager’s plans going forward.

“If he can free that salary up by selling him on – then Tottenham can go out and have some money to play with in the transfer market.

We all know they need to make a few signings, so that makes sense from a business point of view.

“From the player’s perspective as well, he could have his eye on a move back to Spain.

“That is a move which really makes sense from all angles, really.”
