Man United told to abort David De Gea contract talks after update - pundit

Kevin Phillips has insisted David De Gea is on “borrowed time” at Man United and any potential contract talks should be shelved.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Red Devils should draft in a younger replacement for the 31-year-old this summer.

According to 90min (26 April), Man United are ready to press ahead with renewing De Gea’s contract following the appointment of Erik ten Hag earlier this month.

The Spain international, who has impressed with his performances this term, is out of contract in June 2023.

As per FBref, De Gea has the 12th-best save percentage of any Premier League goalkeeper this term.

Phillips suggested the former Atletico Madrid star and Marcus Rashford should be moved on this summer.

“In my opinion, I think they should be moving him on,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I think with the new manager coming in, that would be the best course of action.

“You get to a stage in your career where you’ve been at a club a long time, like Rashford and De Gea, and things need to change.

“They need fresh faces through the door – and maybe they could even go down a younger route.

“I think De Gea is on borrowed time at United along with many other players. It’ll be interesting to see if that contract materalises when Ten Hag comes in.”

De Gea signed for Man United in 2011 and has played 484 times for the club – keeping 164 clean sheets.

The Red Devils, who sit sixth in the Premier League, are likely to be playing Europa League football next season.
