Jurgen Klopp could be handed 'massive' summer war chest after Liverpool news - pundit

Kevin Phillips has claimed Jurgen Klopp may have been made the promise of “massive funds” in the transfer market after he penned a new Liverpool contract.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 54-year-old will be asking for “every penny he can get” from owners Fenway Sports Group.

Liverpool confirmed last week (28 April) that Klopp will remain at Anfield until 2026.

The Merseysiders have been heavily linked with moves for Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham in recent weeks.

Phillips suggested Klopp is still “the best” man for the job with Steven Gerrard “not quite ready” to take the reins at Anfield.

“This new deal suggests he’s been made promises, for sure,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He could have been made assurances about massive funds in the transfer market, assurances about the contracts of Salah and Mane.

“If you’re the owner, why would you not do everything in your power to keep him at the football club?

“I think we all know Steven Gerrard is being groomed to take over, but he’s not quite ready – so why not keep the best?

“It’s a sensible decision, but Klopp won’t be easing up – he’ll be asking the board for every penny he can get.”

Klopp has guided Liverpool to Premier League, Champions League, and League Cup triumphs during his seven-year tenure.

The Reds sit second in the top-flight at present, one point adrift of leaders Man City.
