Tottenham news: Expert issues 'behind-the-scenes' Ryan Sessegnon verdict after 'surprise' source reveal

Ryan Sessegnon has “clearly” impressed Tottenham boss Antonio Conte “behind the scenes” but must now “kick on” at the club, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it is a “surprise” to see the 21-year-old offered new terms at Spurs.

A Tottenham source told this site last week (29 April) that the London side have opened talks with Sessegnon over a new contract.

It is understood that Conte believes the left-back is a ”huge” talent who can develop into a bona fide Premier League star.

Sessegnon‘s current deal runs until 2025.

Phillips insisted the former Fulham star must cement a regular place in the Tottenham side under “one of the best managers in world football”.

“He’s clearly done a lot behind the scenes and in training to impress Conte,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“However, have we seen that translate onto the pitch? You would say probably not, so it’s a surprise to see him get a new contract.

“He’s still obviously a very young kid, still developing and learning – and learning from one of the best managers in world football.

“It’s great for him and his development that Tottenham are looking to extend – but I’d like to see him really kick on and cement a regular place now.

“That has to be his priority for next season.”

Sessegnon has made just 11 Premier League appearances this term, assisting once.

The England Under-21 international joined Tottenham from Fulham for a reported £25million in 2019.
