Rangers news: Expert issues verdict on Gareth Bale move amid '100%' claim - 'incredible'

Rangers will turn down a move for Gareth Bale after “learning their lesson” with the arrival of injury-plagued loan star Aaron Ramsey, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, questioned the 32-year-old’s “desire” and insisted the Gers would need to pay “incredible” wages to tempt the Wales international to Ibrox.

Bale is out of contract at Real Madrid next month, ending his nine-year association with the Spanish giants.

According to Spanish outlet Sport (14 April), Rangers are one of a number of teams interested in signing the winger on a free transfer this summer.

The report claims his future is dependent on Wales’ bid to qualify for the World Cup – with Bale looking to build match fitness at any potential club.

Rob Page’s side will face Scotland or Ukraine on 5 June for a place at the tournament.

Phillips insisted bringing the former Tottenham star to Ibrox would be a “big gamble”.

“They’ve already been stung with Ramsey, and I think they’ll have learned their lesson, 100%,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I just can’t see them wanting to bring Bale in.

“They’d have to fork out incredible wages, and he’s nowhere near the player he was even at Tottenham last season.

“If he was on his game, he’d tear the Scottish Premiership up. But I just don’t think he would entertain a move to Rangers. Has he got that desire to play at club level?

“Paying that sort of money for a player with those sorts of question marks hanging over his head, it’s a big gamble.”

Ramsey joined Rangers on loan in January.

The Wales international has managed just seven starts in all competitions.
