Man City news: Expert tips Kalvin Phillips to complete transfer after £50m latest - 'he'll play a huge part'

Kalvin Phillips will have to accept a reduced role if he is to join Man City this summer, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old is “certainly good enough” to play for the Premier League champions.

According to the Daily Mirror (18 May), Man City have emerged as contenders to sign Phillips this summer – who is rated at around £50million by current side Leeds United.

The report claims Pep Guardiola sees the England international as a replacement for 37-year-old Fernandinho – who is set to return to Brazil this summer.

The Daily Mail report (17 May) Ilkay Gundogan is also set to depart the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Despite the two potential exits, Phillips claimed the Leeds United midfielder will have to accept a reduced role in a trade-off for trophy wins.

“Some players accept that because they know they’re going to pick up the Premier League, the cup competitions – as well as going deep in the Champions League.

“He’ll play a huge part in that if he is to join, but he will no longer be the main man – and he’ll have to accept that.

“I’ve always said Kalvin Phillips is a top, top player and he’s certainly good enough to play for Man City.”
