Newcastle United told to sign Dean Henderson for 'nothing' with agreement now 'inevitable' - pundit

Kevin Phillips has insisted a £40million fee for Man United star Dean Henderson is “nothing” for Newcastle as they target a long-term number one.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old goalkeeper’s age and experience make him well worth the price tag.

According to the Manchester Evening News (17 May), Newcastle are considering a £40million move for Henderson as they look to enhance their squad ahead of next season.

The report claims the former Sheffield United loanee is open to joining the Magpies as he is “desperate” for game time ahead of the World Cup in November.

It is also claimed that a loan deal is also on the table with Henderson’s reported £110,000-a-week wage potentially prohibitive for the mid-table side.

Phillips claimed a “deal” of some sort is “looking inevitable”.

“£40m nowadays is nothing, certainly for Newcastle,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Considering where he’s been, his age, he’s capped by England – it’s a great price.

“You’re getting a goalkeeper you know will be around for a long time, and they’ll certainly get their money’s worth.

“A deal is looking fairly inevitable at this point.”

Henderson is contracted until June 2025.

He made just three appearances for Man United all season and failed to take part in the Premier League.

The shot-stopper has one England cap after being substituted on during a 3-0 friendly win over Ireland in 2020.
