'A leader' - Barry Ferguson on the one position Gerrard still needs to improve at Rangers
Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has admitted that although he has been impressed with the signings made by Steven Gerrard so far this summer, he feels that the Gers need one more addition to really contend for trophies.
Ferguson wants the Light Blues to bring in a midfielder, who would lead the team and presumably go head to head with Celtic captain Scott Brown, who has dominated the Old Firm derby in recent years.
With Gerrard being a midfield general himself, Ferguson believes he is just the right man to identify what could be the last piece in the jigsaw.
“Gerrard will still be looking for a top midfielder and that will cost money. He’ll want a leader and there is no one better to identify one than Gerrard” Ferguson said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“It looks like he’s adding a physical presence which we lacked last season, especially against Celtic.
“When I played in England I realised it’s not just about what kind of player you are. You’ve got to be an athlete to play the game now.”

Football Insider verdict
The sort of player Barry Ferguson is talking about is a player like he was, back when he dominated the midfield for the Gers. Rangers do have one player who seems to be about to be a mainstay on midfield for years to come – Ross McCrorie. But he is more of a defensive midfielder and Ferguson seems to be hoping that the player who comes in will be more attack-minded – like Steven Gerrard was as a player. The Gers have made plenty of signings so far this summer, but as yet there hasn’t been a dominant midfielder among them. As Ferguson says, the Gers will need to get physical if they want to take on Celtic head on next season, which is why bringing an imposing presence into the middle of the park is so important. With the new season just over a month from starting, it will be interesting to see what developments the Gers make in their ongoing pursuit of players.
