Everton want to trim squad before bringing in new players, talks set for next week - report
Everton will not move for any transfer targets until current players have been sold, according to a report.
The Liverpool Echo claims that the club are focusing on reducing the size of their large squad before making any purchases.
The report reveals that new boss Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands want to reduce their 38-man squad to a total of 25, with players such as Davy Klaassen, Ashley Williams and Kevin Mirallas facing the exit.
The Toffees have already seen Ramiro Funes Mori, Wayne Rooney and Joel Robles leave the club this summer, with more departures expected before the end of the transfer window.
Football Insider verdict:
Although Everton fans won’t be happy with this news, the club are doing exactly what’s required ahead of the new Premier League season. The Toffees squad is far too big and full of players who simply don’t cut the mustard. It makes sense to get rid of these unwanted players in order to free up extra wages and transfer funds, before going all out for their prime transfer targets. Marco Silva won’t miss Ramiro Funes Mori or Wayne Rooney and there will be many more players that will find themselves out the door before the end of the window. The most important thing now is they get this done as quickly and effectively as possible, as Marco Silva and Marcel Brands will want to get the most they can for their unwanted players. If it takes too long it could impact on their summer transfer plans, as their targets may get fed up of waiting and take other opportunities. This is a big test of the new regime at Goodison Park.
