Aston Villa must not move for Huth - opinion

There is no denying that the signing of John Terry was a worthwhile one by Aston Villa despite many having doubts about his arrival but the club shouldn’t welcome another veteran centre-back in order to replace him.

The Birmingham Mail reported on Sunday that Robert Huth who is without a club following his release from Leicester City was a player being considered as a potential replacement for Terry.

The local newspaper describe how the club have been hit following their failure to hold on to Terry and that his departure has made the position of centre-back one that Steve Bruce definitely needs to strengthen this summer.

While it is believed that Huth would be willing to take a pay-cut in order to agree a deal with the Villans, it’s time the club started building for the future even if they have to do it on the cheap.

The club’s financial situation may still be up in the air, as described in the report on Huth, but technical director Steve Round has still been on the lookout for new recruits.

It’s no surprise that he is keen on signing Huth.

The centre-back may have hardly featured for the Foxes last season, with him not even making a league appearance, but after previously impressing in his Premier League career, he seems a potential bargain.

The 33-year-old has featured in England’s top-flight 323 times and has been part of a title-winning team on three separate occasions.

Yet despite having experience worth drooling over and perhaps being suited to life in the Championship due to his stature, the Villans need to sign someone young for once.

This could even be on loan as it’s time that energy was poured back into Bruce’s side rather than experience being relied upon.

The Villans’ ageing legs in their 2017/18 campaign let them down on numerous occasions as they couldn’t cope with the demands of England’s second-tier as games came thick and fast.

While the side’s experience was enough to get the club to a play-off final, after failing to win promotion the squad needs a dramatic overhaul due to its age.

Therefore instead of going for a 33-year-old defender like Huth, Round should be recommending younger centre-backs who the club could realistically get and build for the future with.

There is sure to be at least few players who fit that bill even if the Villans have to recruit them with a financial headache hanging over them.
