Exclusive: Oxford United boss Karl Robinson unexpected candidate for manager job at Spanish club

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson has emerged as a surprise candidate for the Malaga job, Football Insider understands.

Malaga are searching for a new head coach following the sacking of Victor Sanchez earlier this weekend.

A source at Oxford told Football Insider that Robinson is understood to be under consideration for the role at Malaga as the Spanish Segunda Liga club look to go in a new direction.

Sanchez had been suspended by the club earlier this week following the publication of an explicit video of the 43-year-old on social media and he has now been sacked by the club after an investigation into the incident.

Robinson has never hidden his desire to manage abroad one day and Malaga could now offer him that opportunity.

The former Liverpool and Blackburn coach has impressed at Oxford this season guiding them to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and they are currently in fifth spot in the League One table.

Robinson, who was the Football League’s youngster ever coach at 29 when he took over at MK Dons in 2010, is now one of the most experienced managers in England having taken charge of over 500 games at the age of 39.

Malaga are currently 16th in the Spanish Segunda Division, just one point above the relegation zone and they will want the new head coach to guide them to survival in the second half of the season.
