Rodgers problem area is clear, Celtic must go all out for Bundesliga defender after revelation

COMMENT

Celtic have been linked with a move to sign Leipzig centre-back Marvin Compper In January, and according to German news outlet Kicker Online, the Bundesliga club are willing to let him leave.

This huge revelation should be music to the ears of Hoops fans, who have watched their side ship 18 goals in the Champions League group stages.

An experienced defender like Compper, who has one cap for Germany, is just what the Hoops need to try and make an impact in the Europa League.

Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic have done well at times as the central-defensive partnership but their limitations have been badly exposed in Europe, particularly in the double header against PSG.

Brendan Rodgers’ defensive issues are now beginning to crop up in domestic football too, as the pairing of Boyata and Simunovic looked all at sea in the 2-2 draw with Hibs.

Compper has only played three times this season for Leipzig but has plenty of Bundesliga experience with Hoffenheim and also played for Fiorentina in Serie A, so Scottish football should hold no fears for him.

Compper may be on the back end of his career, but Celtic really need some experience at the back. Of the current back four, only Mikael Lustig is in his thirties, and that has shown in Europe where more street-wise sides have created all kinds of problems for the Hoops defence.

With the Scottish season have a winter break in January, it would be ideal if Compper was signed right at the start of the transfer window, to give him time to bed-in with his team-mates for a few weeks before the season re-starts.
