'Not impressive' - Sky pundit has a different view of the Liverpool v Everton game to Klopp

Sky Sports pundit Ray Wilkins has criticised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for his decision to leave star players Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino on the bench for the Merseyside derby against Everton.

And he says that the stats show that Liverpool were not as impressive as Klopp thinks they were.

Both players were brought on in the second half as the Reds drew 1-1 with their rivals at Anfield in a game they dominated, in terms of both chances and possession.

Wilkins cannot understand why Klopp decided to rest the players, in what was the biggest game of the season so for the Liverpool fans.

“I am not sure why Jurgen rotated so much. Surely in a derby match you play your best team, especially with West Brom up next,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.

“And I think Jurgen Klopp got it wrong in his post-match views. Three shots on target out of 23 is not very impressive, but they did enough to win the game.”

Everton snatched a draw at Anfield which at one stage looked highly unlikely after they were dominated for much of the game. The Reds created plenty of chances and should of put the game to bed before half-time when Sadio Mane missed a sitter.

The game changed when the Toffees’ were awarded a controversial second-half penalty by referee Craig Pawson after Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren brought down forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin inside the box.

Klopp and the Liverpool players were furious with the decision after Wayne Rooney scored the spot-kick to hand Everton a share of points, but Wilkins is adamant it was the correct call.

“I don’t see where Liverpool are arguing about the penalty, why is Lovren even giving the referee a decision to make?”

The Reds face West Brom at Anfield in their next Premier League game on Wednesday, before a trip to Bournemouth.

In other Liverpool news, Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has made an emphatic prediction for the Reds’ last-16 Champions League tie against Porto.
