Revealed: Chris Wilder's Reading move collapses - sources

Reading have seen their move to appoint Chris Wilder as manager collapse, sources have told Football Insider.

The former Sheffield United and Middlesbrough boss was in advanced talks to take over the Royals.

But the potential move was initially delayed and both parties have now decided to end negotiations.

Reading are now set to continue their managerial search ahead of the 2023/24 season after talks with Wilder broke down.

The Royals, who suffered relegation to League One from the Championship, have been without a permanent manager since Paul Ince’s sacking in April, with Noel Hunt taking the role of interim boss until the end of the season.

Wilder left his latest job at Watford at the end of the 2022/23 season after a short spell in charge.

Before Wilder departed Vicarage Road, he took charge of just 11 games for the Hornets, winning only three.

Wilder also departed Middlesbrough earlier on in the 2022/23 campaign after he was sacked following a run of only two wins in 11 matches.

However, Wilder has enjoyed success in a managerial career that has spanned 597 games.

He experienced a five-year spell with boyhood club Sheffield United from 2016 to 2021, leading them to promotion from League One and the Championship.

Wilder left Bramall Lane by mutual consent in 2021, just a year after leading the Blades to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.
