Sources: Liverpool discover punishment fate after UEFA Youth League brawl

Liverpool and Porto have escaped further sanction after their Under-19s teams were involved in a brawl following a UEFA Youth League meeting at the Reds’ training ground earlier this month, sources have told Football Insider.

The hosts came out on top in a penalty shootout after an engrossing last-16 tie had ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to goals from Jorge Meireles and Melkamu Frauendorf.

But the scenes of celebrations sparked by a missed spot-kick from Porto starlet Umare Cande quickly descended into physical altercations between the two sets of players.

Cande and teammate Goncalo Ribeiro were subsequently sent off for the visitors, while Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas was also shown a red card by referee Helgi Mikael Jonasson.

And, as previously revealed by Football Insider, both clubs feared that UEFA might go further in its punishments than simply suspending that trio.

However, it is understood that won’t be case, with Liverpool and Porto having avoided a hefty fine for their players’ conduct.

Koumas’ part in the fracas will see him serve a one-match suspension, which has been handed down quickly by UEFA so as to ensure he misses the Reds’ quarter-final tie against Sporting Lisbon next Tuesday.

With Porto now out of the competition, decisions on Cande and Ribeiro have been delayed until the European football governing body’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body meet later this month.

Liverpool could have faced additional punishment for the five bookings they received in the game, a disciplinary record that would typically see them fall foul of rules relating to ‘improper conduct’.

However, clubs have previously been let off with warnings for similar indiscretions, and UEFA sources have suggested that is likely to be the case this time.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been backed to beat Premier League rivals to the signing of James Maddison if they secure Champions League qualification this season.
