Kieran Maguire drops 'terrible' Tottenham verdict after failed stadium plot

Tottenham recorded poor attendance figures at their double header because of the ‘terrible’ performance in the men’s match.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the attempted double header at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs announced on 5 May that the club is hosting the first-ever double header of men’s and women’s games back-to-back.

The matches took place on Saturday (20 May) with the men’s side losing 3-1 to Brentford at 12:30pm before the women secured a 4-1 win at 4:15pm.

The attendance of the first match was recorded at 61,514, but only a small fraction stayed to watch the second match four hours after the first had kicked off.

Maguire believes a double header could be successful with better organisation but the ‘terrible’ performance from the men’s side didn’t help retain the audience.

“With better planning and scheduling, I think it can be successful, but you have to have all your ducks in a row,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“You’re effectively asking people to wait around for the length of a cricket game.

“But the intensity of football is different to a longer activity sport.

“If Spurs had been going for the Champions League and they won that match, and if the women’s team were also chasing a Champions League place, I suspect the number of people who stayed would have increased significantly.

“But following a terrible display by the Spurs men’s team, you can understand why people effectively wanted to write off their relationship with the club and leave the stadium.“
