Revealed: Liverpool make approach to sign ex-Man United star - sources

Liverpool are plotting a swoop for Hannover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 34-year-old is expected to be available for a nominal fee this summer despite the 2.Bundesliga outfit recently triggering a one-year extension option in his contract.

And the Reds have contacted his representatives ahead of a potential shake-up of their goalkeeping options behind Alisson Becker.

Liverpool could allow Adrian San Miguel to depart on a free transfer after a four-season stay in which he has featured on 26 occasions.

The Merseyside club are also braced for bids for second-choice shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher, who it is thought could be tempted by the offer of regular playing time elsewhere amid reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

As such, recruitment staff are assessing a number of possible replacements for that pair, with Zieler high on their list partly thanks to the fact he would count towards homegrown quotas in domestic and European competition.

The Cologne-born ‘keeper holds that status having been on the books of Manchester United between the ages of 15 and 21.

He joined the Red Devils’ academy from FC Koln but ultimately failed to make a first-team appearance before returning to his native Germany in 2010.

However, Zieler did go on to get Premier League experience under his belt many years later, spending the 2016-17 campaign serving as back-up to Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester City.

Zieler has otherwise spent the majority of his career representing Hannover, clocking up over 300 appearances across two separate stints with the Germans.

The first of those saw him break into the senior Germany squad, resulting in six caps and a winner’s medal from the 2014 World Cup.

In other news, Calvin Ramsay won’t be rushed back to first-team action for Liverpool despite making a shock return to training this week.
