Sources: Rangers make move to sign Jake Cooper

Rangers have set their sights on signing Millwall defender Jake Cooper, sources have told Football Insider.

Cooper, 28, is entering the final year of his contract at The Den and could be signed for a cut-price fee.

Rangers have held a long-term interest in the former Reading man and that has intensified in recent days with contact made over a potential deal.

They submitted a £3million bid for him as long ago as the summer of 2018.

Ibrox boss Michael Beale sees Cooper as a perfect addition to his squad as he looks to bolster his side’s defensive options.

Cooper has impressed at Millwall since joining the club on a permanent basis from Reading in 2017 – following a successful loan spell the season before.

The 28-year-old was instrumental in the Lions’ surprise push for promotion last season as they just missed out on the playoffs.

He made 46 appearances across all competitions – scoring three goals and providing three assists.

Before making the switch to south London, Cooper had made 54 appearances for League One Reading – where he made his senior debut.

Rangers host Livingston on Saturday (12 August) as they look to avenge their 1-0 opening-day defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock.
