Kieran Maguire makes '£40m' Man City claim as FFP plot revealed

Man City will continue to sell academy players to inflate revenues and maintain Financial Fair Play.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that City will use player profits to make up for their matchday revenues.

City recorded matchday revenues of £64million in their latest 2021/22 financial accounts, trailing significantly behind the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United who all closed in on the £100million mark.

The Manchester club have put plans in place to expand the Etihad Stadium’s capacity to 62,000 with a £300million project as they look to inflate revenues.

But Pep Guardiola’s side have bettered their rivals when it comes to raising funds through player sales, with the club collecting over £50million from selling academy products this summer.

Maguire believes City will continue selling academy stars in future transfer windows as they work on improving matchday revenue in the long term.

It’s absolutely essential that City do make profits from player sales as they do have a deficit compared to the other large clubs in the Premier League in terms of matchday income,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

So they do have to find alternative revenue sources, and this is certainly one way of achieving that objective.

I expect to see that conveyor belt of young talent to continue and that can bridge the £40million gap that exists.

Manchester City are certainly that far behind the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United.

Liverpool’s expansion is going to make it more difficult for City as well to maintain match-day income.

Selling academy players is certainly within City’s strategy to maintain FFP.
