West Ham signed England striker Danny Ings last week but he could be out for three weeks (as per The Sun, 26 January) after an injury on his Irons debut.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The arrival of Danny Ings probably spelt the end of any game time for Antonio.
“He probably wants to squeeze the last bit of football out of his career.
“He’s 33 but he can probably go and do it for another two years.
“He’ll have one year left at the end of the season, but he will want the security of a two or three year deal.
“This is probably the right time for him to move on, and the right time for West Ham to let him go.
“He’s been fantastic for them, but the arrival of Ings and Scamacca an spells exit for him.”
