Pep Guardiola could quit Man City for Euro giants in 2023 as 'worrying' quotes emerge - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Man City should be “worried” about losing Pep Guardiola as Barcelona are one of the only sides capable of tempting him away.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a Champions League triumph this season would increase the likelihood of the 52-year-old’s departure.

As quoted by the Daily Mirror (26 January), Guardiola insisted he would “go” to Barcelona if they were to call him about a managerial vacancy.

The Man City boss enjoyed a historic four-year spell at the Nou Camp between 2008 and 2012, winning two Champions League trophies.

Xavi is now in charge of the Blaugrana and they sit top of La Liga after 17 games.

Guardiola has enjoyed success at Man City, winning four league titles and an FA Cup – but is yet to win an elusive Champions League title with the Citizens.

The Spaniard signed a new contract in November 2022 – keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until June 2025.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “You’re always worried about losing a top-quality manager.

“There are not many who match up to Pep Guardiola and the way he’s transformed this City side.

“The style, the attraction he has for the world’s best players, the education he can give – absolutely, Man City should be worried.

“But he gets the backing at Man City. They’re never scared to give him the cash he wants.

“If the Champions League lands on his lap this season, then there’s a possibility of him leaving.

“But he’s still got a massive job and a big challenge – despite what he’s saying.

“Barcelona are one of the only clubs who could take him away – I think he’d be attracted to the job.”
