Finance guru: Liverpool 'getting exceptional value for money' after official £315m reveal

Liverpool will be delighted with the “value for money” they are getting on their £314million-a-year wage outlay.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recently-revealed Anfield financial details.

Liverpool published their full accounts to Companies House last Wednesday (2 March) after initially releasing a redacted version in February.

One of the headline figures from the new document, which takes in the 12 months up to 31 May 2021, was the £314.5m they spent on employee costs.

That was a decrease on the £325.6m they shelled out to players and staff in the previous financial year.

Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to retain their Premier League crown in 2020-21 and did not reach the later stages of any of the cup competitions.

But Plumley argues that the Merseysiders will be pleased with their general wage outlay despite their off-season.

“I’ve run the numbers,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Willaims.

“City spent £355m, Chelsea £333m, Man United £323m, then Liverpool at £315m. You also have Arsenal at £238m and Spurs at £215m.

“Wage spend tends to correspond with where you finish in the league. Obviously, there is some variation.

“But the clubs who spend the most on wages tend to finish in the top six.

“Liverpool will argue that they are getting exceptional value for money given that they are competing with City when they spend over £40m less.”

Liverpool are eyeing a historic quadruple this season.

They could overtake Man City in the Premier League title race if they win their game in hand and clash against the reigning champions in April.
