Wenham gutted by 'huge blow' as more 'news' emerges on Romero injury at Tottenham

Tottenham will attempt to sign at least one new centre-back in January after news emerged today that Cristian Romero will be out until next year.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On 27 November, Football Insider revealed Tottenham are plotting to sign defensive stars Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt in January.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Inter Milan’s De Vrij, 29, and Juventus’ De Ligt, 22, are regarded as “world class” by Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici.

Wenham is sure Tottenham will sign a new centre back in January after Antonio Conte revealed yesterday via Sky Sports that Romero’s hamstring injury is “very serious” and he won’t play again in 2021.

He claims De Vrij is a more realistic signing.

“We’ve had the news that Romero may be out for longer than expected,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s a huge blow and it’s now not surprising to see us being linked with centre-backs.

“I’m seeing us linked with De Ligt and De Vrij. De Ligt, I’m not sure on.

“The financials on that deal might be too much for us, Juve spent a lot of money on him.

“De Vrij is an interesting one because he was a big part of Conte’s setup at Inter.

“He’s clearly a player trusted by Conte. I do think we will try to sign a centre-back in January.

“That could be dependant on other players moving on but I suspect that’s an area we want to improve.

“With Romero sidelined for a while it just makes sense to sign a top-quality central defender in January.”

As quoted by journalist Jonathan Veal (24 November), Antonio Conte confirmed Romero has been dealt a “serious” injury blow.

The defender suffered a hamstring injury in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil on 16 November.
