Expert can't believe Cameron Archer 'mistake' amid new Aston Villa exit reveal

Kevin Campbell has insisted letting Cameron Archer leave Aston Villa on loan would not be a “mistake” and urged the youngster to “keep his name in people’s mouths” with a goal-laden Championship move.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Unai Emery could replace the 20-year-old striker sensation with a January signing.

Sources told this site on Monday (28 November) that Sunderland are among a number of Championship clubs chasing Aston Villa striker Archer in January.

It is understood that clubs in the second tier are queuing up to take Archer on loan for the second half of the season after his successful spell at Preston in the 2021-22 campaign.

The England Under-21 international scored seven goals in 20 Championship appearances.

Archer was given a fresh five-year deal in the summer but has struggled for game time at Villa Park, playing just 43 minutes of top-flight football this season.

When asked if Emery could regret letting Archer go in January, Campbell told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think it would be a mistake.

“We don’t know how Unai Emery wants to play, and he could be thinking about bringing new players in.

“I think Archer needs game time. Just being in and around the first team isn’t enough.

“He’s already had a good loan, so he needs to go somewhere else to keep that momentum up.

“I think it’s the right thing to do. He needs more football and to keep his name in people’s mouths.

“If he does that, Emery might sit up and take notice. He’d be more likely to give him a go.”
