Dr Dan: Aston Villa have 'great opportunity' after £100m Times report

The FA Cup is a great opportunity to win a trophy for Aston Villa but it will not have a significant impact on their finances.

So says finance expert and new Football Insider columnist Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively about the latest FA Cup TV deal.

The Times reported on 12 November that the FA will take a 20 per cent hit on the value of its overseas rights package.

That would value the new deal at approximately £100million, and it is claimed that new four-year deals have already been signed off.

Villa, who have won the competitions seven times, will enter the 2021-22 FA Cup at the third round in January.

Plumley explained that going all the way in the competition is more about prestige than financial gain.

“It won’t be worth a huge amount to a club like Aston Villa,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“There is £4.8m in prize money available if you enter at the fourth round proper. Villa’s turnover for 2020 was £112.6m.

“So they are not in it for the money. The FA Cup is seen as a great opportunity to win a trophy but it’s not very lucrative.

“Their recent history in the competition shows that they have lost in the third round for the last three seasons.

“So they have earned next to nothing over that time. But it is still important for the fans and represents a chance at silverware.”
