Insider: Tottenham 'already working' on Bergwijn January deal as £7m loss on the cards
Tottenham should already be working on a deal that will see Steven Bergwijn join Ajax in January.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
On 29 November, Dutch outlet De Telegraff claimed Tottenham are set to receive an enquiry for Bergwijn, 24, from the Dutch giants in January.
The winger is yet to feature under new Spurs boss Antonio Conte despite being on the bench for three of his four games in charge.
Wenham insists Bergwijn’s exit “makes sense” as Conte’s system doesn’t utilise wingers.
“There were reports in the summer that claimed Ajax were in for Bergwijn,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It hasn’t really worked out for him at Tottenham. He’s one where if we get anywhere near the £27million we paid for him, certainly more than £20million, I would love to sell.
“Hopefully the people in charge are already working on that deal, that could be happening.
“Bergwijn is one we could recoup some money from so if he goes on 1 January that gives us the full window to reinvest.
“It makes a lot of sense that he would move on because Conte doesn’t really use wingers.
“I also just can’t see Bergwijn doing a job as a number 10. I don’t see him getting game time.”
Bergwijn has made nine appearances for Spurs this season but is yet to find the net.
However, on 16 November, he scored one of his side’s goals as the Netherlands qualified for the 2022 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Norway.
