New BBC footage reveals why Hatate was onside for Celtic goal v Kilmarnock

New information reveals why Luis Palma’s Celtic goal against Kilmarnock on Saturday (7 October) was not disallowed for offside.

The Hoops were already 1-0 when Palma scored the Hoops’ second goal of the afternoon in the clash against Killie at Parkhead that they went on to win 3-1.

As shown on Sportscene (7 October), Reo Hatate appeared to be offside in the build-up before Palma played the ball to the midfielder, who got a touch on it before it went back to his teammate to tee up the finish with an impressive shot from outside the box.

The decision was referred to the VAR officials, who opted to stick with the decision of the on-field referee and award the goal. The Hoops went on to win the game 3-1.

In discussing the incident, BBC Sportscene panel member, and former Motherwell striker, James McFadden detailed the reason for allowing the goal – that Kilmarnock defender Stuart Ferguson made a deliberate attempt to play the ball before it touched Hatate.

Speaking on the BBC programme McFadden said: “When the initial ball is played inside, it looks like it is for Hatate, who is in an offside position or certainly looks to be.

But when Stuart Findlay goes back in, the referee and VAR have deemed him to have made a deliberate attempt to play the ball.

This is the rules now, it does not matter if someone is offside, if they are not making a challenge for the ball they are not active.

If Stuart Findlay goes to clear it, VAR deem that he is in control of the situation there, whether or not it rebounds off someone else.
